Trump questions Kamala Harris’ identity by asking if she is Indian or Black during a convention of Black journalists.

On July 31, Donald Trump made controversial comments about Kamala Harris at the National Association of Black Journalists convention, suggesting that she had previously emphasized her Indian heritage over her Black identity. He claimed that Harris “turned Black” later on and questioned whether she identifies as Indian or Black. These remarks were met with jeers from the audience of about 1,000 people.

Harris, who has both Indian and Jamaican heritage, has long identified as both Black and Asian. She responded to Trump’s comments by criticizing them as divisive and disrespectful. Her campaign has faced various sexist and racist attacks, with some questioning her racial identity.

During the same event, Trump dismissed questions about his past racist comments and called the media “fake.” He boasted about being the best president for Black Americans and used the term “Black jobs,” which drew criticism. He also avoided commenting on whether Harris was a “DEI hire” and admitted he was unfamiliar with a case involving police immunity.

The interview, which began over an hour late due to technical issues, ended abruptly after 35 minutes. Trump continued to focus on attacking Harris’ policies during a subsequent rally in Pennsylvania. His campaign, however, is trying to appeal to Black voters amid decreasing support for Biden and recent polls showing a tight race between Harris and Trump.
