A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday at Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, Washington, where a 13-year-old girl lost her life after being struck by gunfire during a confrontation, according to authorities.

The Lynnwood Police Department reported that Jayda Woods-Johnson was fatally shot in what they described as a “tragic murder” at the mall. The suspect, identified as a 16-year-old male from Edmonds, was apprehended and brought into custody by his mother. He is expected to face charges of murder and will be booked into jail accordingly.

The incident occurred following an altercation between two groups near the mall’s food court. Woods-Johnson, who was not involved with either group, appears to have been an innocent bystander hit by a stray bullet, police indicated.

In response to the tragedy, a spokesperson for Brookfield Properties, the mall’s owner, expressed gratitude to the security team and law enforcement for their swift actions and leadership during the crisis. The spokesperson conveyed deep sorrow over the senseless and horrific nature of the incident, emphasizing that their primary thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time. Out of respect for the community and in honor of the victim and her loved ones, Alderwood Mall remained closed following the incident.

The shooting has left the local community in shock and mourning, prompting reflections on public safety measures and the tragic consequences of gun violence. The police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the motives behind the altercation that led to this heartbreaking loss of life.
