Staff at a Milwaukee hotel are charged with murder following a man’s death.

Four former hotel employees at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee face murder charges following the death of D’Vontaye Mitchell. Mitchell, 43, had been acting erratically and entered a women’s bathroom before being forcibly removed and restrained by the staff on June 30. During the incident, he was beaten and held face down for eight to nine minutes. By the time police arrived, Mitchell was unresponsive and later pronounced dead.

The post-mortem revealed that Mitchell died from “restraint asphyxia” combined with the effects of cocaine and methamphetamine. The report also noted his severe obesity. The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office has issued arrest warrants for Todd Alan Erickson, 60, and Brandon LaDaniel Turner, 35 (off-duty at the time), as well as Devin Johnson-Carson, 23, and Herbert Williamson, 53.

The charges come after Mitchell’s chaotic behavior inside the hotel, including attempts to hide and lock himself in a bathroom, led to a violent response from the staff. Surveillance footage showed the employees dragging him out of the bathroom, hitting him, and holding him down. Mitchell can be heard apologizing during the struggle and pleading for help.

Ben Crump, the family’s lawyer, criticized the staff for their excessive force during Mitchell’s mental health crisis. Mitchell’s widow, Deasia Harmon, expressed relief over the charges and demanded accountability. The hotel’s management, Aimbridge Hospitality, has previously terminated several employees in connection with the incident.
