Russian missile destroys two Ukrainian Su-27 fighters parked outdoors 100 miles from the front line

A Russian surveillance drone flew from Russian territory toward Ukraine’s Mirgorod air base, approximately 100 miles from the northern border with Russia, either on or just before Monday. The drone identified six Ukrainian Sukhoi Su-27 fighters parked openly during daylight hours. Subsequently, a Russian Iskander missile was launched, resulting in the destruction of two Su-27s and damage to the remaining four, marking one of the most significant losses in a single day for Ukraine’s air force since Russia escalated its conflict in February 2022.

Yuriy Ignat, an official from the Ukrainian air force, acknowledged the losses, prompting criticism from Ukrainian bloggers directed at the decision to park the jets in an exposed area so close to the front line.

This incident at Mirgorod follows a series of similar attacks on vulnerable Ukrainian air bases, including strikes by Russian Lancet drones that have targeted Ukrainian jets at Dolgintsevo air base near Kryvyi Rih, just 45 miles from the front line in southern Ukraine. These strikes have resulted in the destruction of several Ukrainian aircraft over recent months.

Since fall 2022, Russian attacks on Ukrainian air assets have included surprise strikes on Mikoyan MiG-29 fighters and other aircraft, underscoring the ongoing vulnerability of parked planes to drone and missile attacks. Ukrainian efforts to mitigate losses include acquiring replacement aircraft and considering the relocation of operational jets away from bases most exposed to Russian strikes. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain given the range and capability of Russian ballistic and cruise missiles.

Ukrainian military strategists are also emphasizing the need for increased unpredictability in their operations to evade Russian targeting. This includes deploying decoys and potentially constructing reinforced shelters to protect parked aircraft.

Despite these defensive measures, the threat posed by Russian attacks on Ukrainian air assets underscores the challenges and risks faced by Ukraine in its ongoing conflict. The situation highlights the complex dynamics and vulnerabilities of both Ukrainian and Russian military operations in the region.
