Janet Napolitano to Join Review of Secret Service’s Response to Trump Shooting
On Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas appointed Janet Napolitano, a former Secretary of Homeland Security, to join a bipartisan panel tasked with a 45-day independent review of the recent attempt on former President Trump’s life.
The panel will also include Frances Townsend and Mark Filip, former security officials from President George W. Bush’s administration, and David Mitchell, former superintendent of the Maryland State Police. Mayorkas indicated that additional experts might be added soon.
Mayorkas emphasized the importance of this review, stating that it aims to thoroughly investigate the events of July 13, including the actions of the Secret Service and other authorities before, during, and after the rally. The review will also examine the Secret Service’s policies and procedures. He requested that the panel provide immediate recommendations so that any necessary changes can be swiftly implemented.
In his statement, Mayorkas underscored the critical nature of ensuring the safety of current and former Presidents and acknowledged the challenging role of the Secret Service. He promised to make the review’s findings public, aligning with President Biden’s earlier directive for an independent review and public disclosure of results.
Napolitano has previously criticized Trump publicly, but she will now be part of the investigation into how the assassination attempt occurred. The FBI is leading the criminal investigation into the Secret Service’s response, and the independent review will be conducted without interfering with this ongoing investigation.
