“Jan. 6 Rioter Who Assaulted Police with Pole Gets 20-Year Sentence”
David Dempsey, a 37-year-old California man, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his violent actions during the January 6 Capitol riot. Dempsey, identified as one of the most aggressive rioters, used various weapons including flag poles, crutches, pepper spray, and furniture pieces to attack at least two police officers. US District Judge Royce Lamberth condemned Dempsey’s actions as “exceptionally egregious,” noting that his behavior was not just a momentary lapse. Dempsey pleaded guilty to assaulting officers. Among the over a thousand people arrested for Capitol riot-related crimes, only Enrique Tarrio, leader of the Proud Boys, has received a longer sentence at 22 years. Dempsey, who has a criminal history including burglary and drug offenses, was noted for wearing a bullet-proof vest and hiding his face during the riot. Prosecutors described him as embodying political violence, though he has reportedly expressed deep regret for his actions.
