On Thursday, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Palestinian militia representatives prayed over the coffins of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and his bodyguard, who were killed in an assassination attributed to Israel. The ceremony took place at Tehran University, and the coffins were later paraded through Tehran with flowers thrown by onlookers. Haniyeh, who had recently attended an inauguration for Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian, was killed in an airstrike on his Tehran residence. The assassination, which follows Israel’s pledge to target Hamas leaders, has heightened fears of a broader regional conflict. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for restraint to prevent further escalation, while Pezeshkian expressed solidarity with Palestinians and condemned the ongoing violence.
