Copa America Final: Messi’s Tears of Joy as He Celebrates Record Victory

Copa America 2024 Final: Lionel Messi triumphs over tears and an ankle injury as Argentina defeats Colombia 1-0, securing their 16th continental title, surpassing Uruguay.

Lionel Messi, despite a painful ankle injury, found immense joy as Argentina successfully defended their Copa America title with a 1-0 victory over Colombia on July 15 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The match, which faced nearly a 90-minute delay due to crowd disturbances, showcased the resilience and determination of Messi and his teammates under the guidance of coach Lionel Scaloni.

The victory marked Argentina’s 16th Copa America title, surpassing Uruguay’s record and adding to their recent successes, including the FIFA World Cup. The triumph was hard-fought, and after over 125 minutes of intense play, Argentina emerged as champions once again.

Messi, who was visibly emotional and had moments of tears earlier in the match, was substituted in the 64th minute due to his injury. His knee had swollen, leaving him unable to continue. At that point, it seemed Colombia might take control of the game. However, Argentina’s tenacity shone through as they fought back, pushing the match into extra time.

The decisive moment came from Lautaro Martinez, who scored the winning goal in the 112th minute, sealing the victory for Argentina. Even though Messi was limping, he ensured he participated in the team huddle, soaking in the atmosphere and the applause from the enthusiastic crowd, which was predominantly made up of Argentine fans.

After the match, Messi shared heartfelt moments with his coach, Lionel Scaloni, who has played a pivotal role in Messi’s career by helping him achieve the accolades he deserves. Messi also embraced Angel di Maria, who was closing in on the end of his international career on a high note, and celebrated with Martinez, who allowed his tears of joy to flow freely.

The Argentine supporters filled the stadium with drums and trumpets, celebrating the national team’s incredible achievement of winning three major titles in recent years: two Copa Americas and the World Cup. Although Messi couldn’t showcase his famous footwork on the dance floor to the celebratory music, he was fully immersed in the joy of the moment.

In a display of gratitude, coach Lionel Scaloni ran the length of the field to acknowledge the fans’ support following the final whistle, reinforcing the strong bond between the team and its supporters.

As for Messi’s future, it remains uncertain whether he will continue his international career. However, if he decides to retire from international football, he could not have hoped for a more fitting conclusion than leading Argentina to glory in Miami, a city that has become a second home for him.

In summary, the victory at Copa America not only solidified Argentina’s place in football history but also highlighted Messi’s enduring legacy as one of the greatest players of all time, celebrating his achievements alongside his teammates in a memorable and emotional night.
