Breanna Stewart and US women’s basketball team reach Paris Olympics gold medal game

Breanna Stewart and the U.S. women’s basketball team advanced to the gold medal game at the Paris Olympics with a decisive 85-64 victory over Australia in the semifinals. This win extended their Olympic winning streak to 60 games, dating back to 1992.

Stewart, who led a well-rounded offense, acknowledged the historic streak, emphasizing the high standards of representing Team USA. The team’s strong performance impressed notable spectators including Sue Bird and Kevin Durant.

With the win, the U.S. will face France in the final, aiming to achieve a record eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal, surpassing the U.S. men’s team’s seven consecutive golds from 1936 to 1968.

Coach Cheryl Reeve used the game to rest her starters, ensuring they would be fresh for the final. Diana Taurasi, aiming for a record sixth gold medal, played briefly as the U.S. took an early lead and built a commanding advantage by halftime.

Jackie Young, Kahleah Copper, and A’ja Wilson also contributed significantly to the win. Australia’s Isobel Borlase, Tess Madgen, and Ezi Magbegor were the top scorers for their team, but were unable to match the U.S. team’s offensive strength. The Opals have never defeated the U.S. in Olympic play, having lost in the gold medal matches of 2000, 2004, and 2008.
