Russia strikes Ukraine with missiles and drones for a second consecutive day, according to Kyiv.

Early Tuesday, Ukraine’s military reported that Russia launched multiple waves of missile and drone strikes across various Ukrainian regions, resulting in at least four deaths. In Kryvyi Rih, a central Ukrainian city, a hotel was destroyed in an attack that killed two people. Another two individuals died in drone strikes on Zaporizhzhia, located east of Kryvyi Rih. Kyiv’s air defense systems were activated multiple times throughout the night to intercept missiles and drones targeting the capital, with witnesses reporting at least three explosions in Kyiv.

On Monday, Russia had already conducted its largest air assault of the conflict, deploying over 200 missiles and drones. This attack caused at least seven deaths and significant damage to energy infrastructure, drawing condemnation from U.S. President Joe Biden. Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War noted that Russia might struggle to maintain such extensive strikes regularly due to limitations in defense-industrial capacity.

Russian military bloggers described the attacks as retaliation for a recent Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory, marking the first such event since World War Two. While the Kremlin has promised a response to the incursion in Kursk, Kyiv claims ongoing advances in the region. Despite Moscow’s continued strikes, Ukrainian forces remain entrenched.

The full impact of the Tuesday attacks is still unclear, but Ukraine’s air force detected multiple drone launches and flights of Russian Tu-95 bombers and MiG-31 interceptors. The Kremlin has not commented on the situation, and it maintains that it does not target civilians in the conflict. According to Russia’s defense ministry, Monday’s strikes hit all intended targets, focusing on Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure.

Air raid alerts were issued across Kryvyi Rih, Kyiv, and other central and eastern regions throughout the night. In Kryvyi Rih, two civilians may still be trapped under the rubble of the destroyed hotel, and five others were injured. The attack also damaged six shops, four high-rise buildings, and eight vehicles. In Zaporizhzhia, two fatalities and four injuries were reported, attributed to Iranian-made Shahed drones used by Russia.
