College Student Dies After Falling 400 Feet at Grand Canyon, Authorities Report
The body of a college student who reportedly fell around 400 feet from a Grand Canyon rim was discovered on Thursday, according to officials. Abel Joseph Mejia, 20, was hiking near Pipe Creek Overlook when he fell. Despite rescue efforts using a high-angle technical system, Mejia was presumed dead from the fall. The National Park Service is still investigating the incident but has not found any evidence of foul play or suicide.
Park officials remind visitors to stay at least 6 feet from the canyon’s edge, though it’s unclear how close Mejia was to the brink. Mejia, who was on a mission trip, was remembered fondly by Indiana Bible College for his warm demeanor. The Grand Canyon, known for its dangerous terrain and extreme weather, sees about 17 fatalities annually, primarily from falls and medical issues. This incident marks at least the fifth death this year at the park, which attracts over 4 million visitors annually.
