“ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode Wows Testers with Sound Effects and Breathing”

On Tuesday, OpenAI began releasing an alpha version of its Advanced Voice Mode to select ChatGPT Plus subscribers. This feature, first previewed in May with GPT-4o, aims to make interactions with the AI more natural. Despite early criticism regarding its simulated emotions and controversy over voice imitation, feedback has been largely positive. The new mode enables real-time conversations, allows interruptions mid-sentence, and responds to emotional cues with sound effects and simulated breathing.

Tech writer Cristiano Giardina noted the impressive simulation of human-like breathing pauses and fast response times. The mode also demonstrates accents and performs sound effects, though it tends to use an American accent in other languages. Users have shared examples of the AI playing different voices, narrating stories with onomatopoeia, and offering real-time advice.

Safety measures include blocking impersonation of individuals and copyrighted audio, though some unintended music was detected. OpenAI plans to expand access to more ChatGPT Plus users in the coming weeks, with a full rollout expected this fall.
